Chapter

Six

Cassius awoke on their final morning together, his heart heavy. He’d attempted to pretend the end wasn’t speeding closer over the two days and nights they’d had left. In that narrow gap, he’d learned as much about his mate as possible. After getting a taste, he wasn’t willing to let go. Watching his mate sleep, he fought back and forth, debating what happened next.

From the minute he’d entered Salem, he’d known it was home. The energy in the town was unlike anything he’d experienced and the thought of walking away from that nearly broke him. He belonged to Salem… and Switch did, too. Perhaps not in the immediate future, but Cassius knew deep down in his soul that Switch would eventually come home to him.

Yet letting Switch slip through his fingers in the present was ripping his heart out.

Switch’s lids fluttered before he awoke, a half-hearted smile on his face. “Morning.”

“Morning.” He turned away. It was difficult to look into his familiar’s eyes, knowing the end was nigh.

“It’s not too late,” Switch whispered, drawing Cassius’ gaze back to his. “You can pack your bags and get on that plane with me.”

“I… can’t.” Salem had ahold of him and wasn’t letting go. “I belong here.” We belong here. He searched Switch’s face. “Fate brought me to this spot. I sense it in my bones.”

Switch scoffed. “Fucking Fate.”

“And I can’t turn my back on my studies, either.” He struggled for air, his heart and soul ripped in two. If he left, would he change his destiny? And what of their third?

Tears shone in Switch’s eyes. “I can’t live here, Cas. It’s not where I belong.”

Cassius choked back a sob. “Like you said, there are planes. I can come to L.A., and you can come here to visit me.”

“Of course,” Switch said, wiping dampness from his eye. He sat up in bed. “I need to finish packing.”

Cassius rested his back on the headboard while watching his mate dress and prepare to leave. He couldn’t move. Couldn’t do anything to stop the forward momentum. It pressed on his chest, making it harder to breathe.

Someone knocked on the door, and Switch’s gaze flipped to his. “Remain quiet. I’ll get rid of them.”

Switch padded barefoot to the door and opened it a crack. Cassius heard a familiar voice from behind it. A woman burst past Switch and froze a few steps inside, her gaze locking with Cassius’.

The very star of the show.

Switch swung the door closed and locked it. He turned, his face pale.

Elizabeth Montgomery’s slow smile scared the hell out of Cassius. While L.A. seemed much more liberal, he knew Switch was careful. Could being caught ruin his career?

If so… he could come here with me.

Cassius cringed, the thought making his stomach turn. He wasn’t that person. He absolutely didn’t want Switch’s career to go down in flames just to get the man closer. The fact he’d considered it for a split second made him queasy.

“I knew you had something going on,” Elizabeth said, her gaze whipping to Switch.
